Political Involvement

As Mike enters his 30th year in Emergency Medicine, he feels that it is time to give back to the community.

Mike entered Loyola University as a philosophy major with a Pre-law intent. He and his friends from Brother Rice High School planned to provide the leadership of the Freshman Class at the University. Mike Madden was going to run for president, but the group changed this to John Karamanski. Mike Oster ran for President and came in 2nd. Brother Rice was very well represented with John K, as president,, Mike Oster as his vice president. Kevin Cronin of Fuscia (later REO Speedwagon) won the Freshman activities board position and was able to book BB King at the Alumni Gym that year. Mike changed to Pre-med his Sophomore year, but kept his philosophy major.

Mike was the only philosophy major at his medical school and has used this training to help him caring for patients in a holistic way. Physicians in ancient times were also philosophy majors.

Mike was always a political junkie and would break the taboo frequently to talk religion and politics with friends.

It was just this discussion that led to him running for coroner. He has been encouraged for the past twenty or so years to run for office. Recently, a republican leader told him that he should run for congress. Mike answered that if he would run for office in the near future, he would run for coroner. That brought a huge smile to Ant Simonian. Within two hours, Barb Richardson was on the phone to show her support. She had worked with Mike while he was on the child protection team. The next to phone was Mike Waller, who had also worked with Mike on child abuse cases and with the Children’s Advocacy Center.

Mike has helped with local political campaign’s.  Whether it was political signs, talking up these candidates to other or helping with collecting signatures, Mike was there to help.
